Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions Scottish homeowners most often ask about green home improvement finance, surveys and quotes. If your question is not covered here, please contact us or call 0141 230 0198.
About our service
We are Scottish Energy Efficiency, based in Dundee. We arrange no-obligation surveys and quotes for paid installations of solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps for homeowners across Scotland. We do not install ourselves — installation is carried out by our MCS-certified partner. Loans are available, subject to status.
We do not quote for work outside Scotland, and we do not ask you to commit to anything at the survey stage.
About the finance
Finance is available to spread the cost of a green home improvement over time. Because the monthly cost depends on your home, the installation, the repayment term and your personal circumstances, we do not publish rates or loan amounts on this website. Instead, you receive a written quote with a representative example after your survey.
The exact wording we use is: Loans available, subject to status. Finance is subject to eligibility and affordability checks. A representative example is provided with any quote.
About VAT
The installation of solar panels and battery storage for residential properties is subject to 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Heat pump installation for residential properties also benefits from a 0% VAT rate. Your quote will reflect the VAT treatment applicable at the time of installation. If government policy on VAT changes before your installation, the applicable rate at the time of installation will apply.
About the survey and quote
The survey is carried out at your home by our MCS-certified partner and is no-obligation. After the survey, you receive a written quote that includes a representative example showing the monthly cost. You can take the quote away and decide in your own time — there is no pressure to proceed.
If you decide to go ahead, the installation is scheduled and carried out by our MCS-certified partner. If you decide not to go ahead, that is completely fine.

Frequently asked questions
What green home improvements can I get a loan for in Scotland?
We arrange no-obligation surveys and quotes for paid installations of solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps for homeowners across Scotland. Installation is carried out by our MCS-certified partner. Loans are available, subject to status, and a representative example is provided with any quote.
Is the survey and quote really no-obligation?
Yes. The survey and the written quote are provided with no obligation. You only proceed with an installation if you choose to, and there is no pressure at any stage. A representative example is provided with any finance quote so you can decide in your own time.
Why do you not show interest rates on the website?
Because the monthly cost depends on your home, the installation, the repayment term and your personal circumstances, a single rate on a website would not reflect what you would actually pay. Instead, you receive a written quote with a representative example after a no-obligation survey.
What is a representative example?
A representative example is a standard way of showing the cost of borrowing, setting out the key figures including the monthly payment and the total amount payable for a typical agreement. A representative example is provided with any quote we provide.
Who carries out the installation?
We arrange the survey and quote. The installation itself is carried out by our MCS-certified partner, so the work is completed under proper accreditation. We install through MCS-certified partners.
Do you cover all of Scotland?
Yes. We arrange surveys and quotes for homeowners across Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands and Islands. See our areas covered page for more detail on the regions we cover.
Is the 0% VAT rate on solar panels still active?
The 0% VAT rate on the installation of solar panels and battery storage for residential properties applies until 31 March 2027. Heat pump installation also benefits from a 0% VAT rate. Your quote will reflect the VAT treatment applicable at the time of installation.
What does "loans available, subject to status" mean?
It means that finance is available to qualifying applicants, and that eligibility and affordability checks apply. The exact monthly cost and terms depend on your circumstances and are set out in the written quote and representative example you receive after your survey.
Can I get a quote without having a survey?
A proper quote requires a survey, because the cost depends on factors specific to your home — your roof, heating system, insulation and so on. We do not provide quotes without a survey, as that would not give you an accurate figure.
How do I get started?
Complete the short form on our get a quote page or on the home page, or call us on 0141 230 0198. Our Scottish team will arrange a no-obligation survey at a time that suits you.
